Artist’s Statement
After some inspiring evening classes in ceramics, I now have a kiln and experiment with three dimensional forms in clay. I predominantly use porcelain paper-clay, finding this a fantastic medium for sculpture as it can be reworked and manipulated in ways that ordinary clay cannot.
When painting I try to create colour and texture through a limited palette and multiple ways of applying paint, spraying and sponging on clay with oxides, underglazes and glazes, with some pieces being fired several times. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
More often than not my work is figurative but I also make small pots so that I can play with glazes and firing temperatures. The excitement and anticipation of opening the kiln door after a firing never diminishes.
