Cheryl Hewitt

Cheryl is a contemporary mixed media artist and recent masters graduate from the Hereford College of Arts. Born and raised in Herefordshire she spent most of her childhood exploring the fields and woods surrounding the family farm, making up stories and collecting lost or broken things to keep in a box her bed!

Cheryl’s creative practice is inspired by her childhood experiences and traces of memory. She enjoys engaging with vintage and reclaimed textiles as they often have their own stories to tell. Her pieces are primarily hand stitched, giving Cheryl time to engage with the fabrics and reflect on their previous life. She also uses eco dyeing, staining and bundle dyeing to age the fabrics further. It is the intention of these sometimes-quiet textile pieces to communicate childhood stories, to capture a sense of the forgotten moments.

Found objects provide their own narratives; Objects, especially those that are misplaced or abandoned, can quietly speak of a previous life. An unfinished piece of embroidery or a worn and much-loved child’s teddy have the power to evoke memory.
